Sidney Sheldon, who won awards in three careers, Broadway theater, movies and television, then at age 50 turned to writing best-selling novels about stalwart women who triumph in a hostile world of ruthless men, has died. He was 89.

Sheldon died Tuesday afternoon of complications from pneumonia at Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage, said Warren Cowan, his publicist. His wife, Alexandra, and his daughter, author Mary Sheldon, were by his side.

“I’ve lost a longtime and dear friend,” Cowan said. “In all my years in this business, I’ve never heard an unkind word said about him.”

Sheldon’s books, with titles such as “Rage of Angels,” “The Other Side of Midnight,” “Master of the Game” and “If Tomorrow Comes,” provided his greatest fame. They were cleverly plotted, with a high degree of suspense and sensuality and a device to keep the reader turning pages.

“I try to write my books so the reader can’t put them down,” he explained in a 1982 interview. “I try to construct them so when the reader gets to the end of a chapter, he or she has to read just one more chapter. It’s the technique of the old Saturday afternoon serial: leave the guy hanging on the edge of the cliff at the end of the chapter.”

Never realised he’s this old already. Am sure he lived an interesting and fulfilling life.

Rest in peace.

Brandy Is Sued For $50 MillionBrandy Is Sued For $50 Million

January 31st 2007

Singer-actress Brandy was sued for $50 million on Tuesday by the family of a woman killed in a four-car freeway crash which police have blamed on the 27-year-old performer.

The wrongful death lawsuit by the parents of Awatef Aboudihaj, 38, was filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court a day after police recommended that prosecutors charge Brandy with a misdemeanor count of vehicular manslaughter.

The California Highway Patrol found that the entertainer, whose full name is Brandy Norwood, was at fault in the December 30 accident for failing to prevent her Land Rover from hitting the car in front of her when traffic suddenly slowed, CHP spokesman Leland Tang said this week.

Wow, will Brandy be bankrupted by this lawsuit? It’s not like she’s been the most popular star recently, if you know what I mean?

The Highway Patrol referred the case to the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office for further review with the recommendation that the former star of the TV comedy “Moesha” be cited with a misdemeanor charge of vehicular manslaughter.

A misdemeanor offense carries a maximum penalty of one year in jail and a $1,000 fine.

It is less serious than a felony charge and means that prosecutors determine that the death did not result from gross negligence, a spokesman for the city attorney said.

A year in jail will certainly jumpstart her stale career too.

Jennifer Lopez’s Dad is a Scientologist!

January 31st 2007

During an interview with a Miami TV station, Jennifer Lopez spoke up on behalf of Scientology and revealed that her father, David Lopez, is a follower.

“My dad has been a Scientologist for 20 years,” Lopez, 37, told South Florida’s NBC6. “It’s weird people want to paint it in a negative way.”

Lopez made her remarks while being asked about Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes‘ Nov. 18 “wedding of the decade” in Italy, which Lopez and her husband, Marc Anthony, attended. Besides the groom, Lopez’s close friend, Leah Remini, is a Scientologist.

J. Lo the Catholic girl

That’s some odd surprise. Actually, she’s right. It’s not only Scientology that’s negative, all religions in this world are negative.

Asked for her response to some people’s negative perception of Scientology, Lopez said, “I, myself, am Catholic. But it’s just sad that people would look at it (Scientology) in that way.”

After the interview aired, Lopez’s rep, Leslie Sloane, said, “Jennifer is not a Scientologist, nor is she becoming a Scientologist.

Eh, she’s Catholic? How come she can marry so many times…is that allowed?

RIP Xu Wei Lun

Ex-boyfriend Lee Wei was especially emotional when news came Xu had passed on. Taiwan actor Lee Wei and Xu had gone separate ways and has not been in touch with one another for almost a year.

Another ex-boyfriend, F4’s Vic Chow was criticized for being insensitive. When Xu was first admitted to the hospital, reporters asked Vic if he would visit Xu. Vic was slammed by media when he replied he wish Xu a speedy recovery but will not go visit because he did not want to be accused of using his visitation as free publicity. *self importance huh?*

Police Want To Charge Brandy For Vehicular Manslaughter

January 30th 2007

The California Highway Patrol recommended Monday that actress-singer Brandy be charged with misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter in a freeway crash that killed a woman motorist last month, a city attorney’s spokesman told The Associated Press.

The CHP referred the matter to the city attorney’s office for review, said spokesman Nick Velasquez.

“The office is currently reviewing the case and determining whether the evidence warrants the filing of a misdemeanor charge of vehicular manslaughter,” Velasquez said.

A message seeking comment from Brandy’s publicist, Courtney Barnes, was not immediately returned. Earlier this month, Barnes issued a statement saying Brandy “wishes to publicly express her condolences to the family of the deceased.”

Barnes also has said Brandy wasn’t under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the crash.

The charge carries a maximum sentence of one year in county jail and a $1,000 fine, Velasquez said.

Kudos to the cops. They’re finally taking action. Brandy ought to be punished. Just because she wasn’t intoxicated doesn’t mean it’s okay to kill someone. We’re talking about somebody’s life here.

How does Brandy look like in prison garb?

Prosecutors couldn’t say when they would make a decision about whether to bring a case. If charged, Brandy wouldn’t necessarily have to appear in court and could have her lawyer enter a plea, Velasquez said.

Brandy, 27, was driving a Land Rover on Interstate 405 on Dec. 30 when traffic slowed and her vehicle struck the back of Honda driven by Awatef Aboudihaj, 38, according to a CHP report.

Aboudihaj’s car hit another vehicle, slid sideways into the center divider and was then hit by another car, the report said. Aboudihaj, a Los Angeles waitress, died at a hospital from blunt-force injuries, according to the coroner’s office.

The CHP alleges in a report that Brandy caused the accident by breaking a law against driving at a speed “greater than is reasonable or prudent” or that “endangers the safety of persons or property,” according to a part of the report obtained by the AP.

Bill Sayed, an attorney for Aboudihaj’s husband, said he supported the CHP’s recommendation.

Brandy, who earned a Grammy in 1999, has made five albums. She began her recording career at 14 and acted for film and television, starring on the sitcom “Moesha” from 1996-2001 and most recently as a judge for NBC’s “America’s Got Talent.”

Good luck to Brandy. Prison sentence or not, she ought to be tried.

Miss Brazil 2002 Taiza Thomsen Still Missing, Might Be Victim Of Human Trafficking

January 28th 2007

[SOURCE]

Miss Brazil 2002, Taiza Thomsen

Police said Saturday they weren’t discarding the possibility that human trafficking played a role in the disappearance of a former Miss Brazil who hasn’t contacted her family since September.

Taiza Thomsen, 24, represented Brazil at the 2003 Miss Universe pageant in Panama. The last time she spoke to her parents, she said she was in London.

“At this moment we can’t rule out anything, not even the possibility she was a victim of human trafficking,” police investigator Marcos David Salem told Brazilian TV.

Police began investigating the case Friday, after Thomsen’s family reported her missing the previous day. Police said they had no leads.

How on earth did Taiza Thomsen manage to get herself in such a sticky situation? Personally, I feel that it’s rather far-fetched to suspect human trafficking. Unless kidnapping was involved I don’t think an educated lass like Taiza Thomsen can be duped by human trafficking rings. Of course, we can never know, can we?

Perhaps, her missing is due to personal reasons only Taiza Thomsen would know?

Thomsen’s family has said that in some of their conversations before she went missing, she left them with the feeling that she was being threatened. The family did not elaborate.

According to some of her friends, Thomsen had worked briefly in Belgium and there was a possibility she was still there, media reported.

A friend said Saturday that she talked to Thomsen over the phone about three months ago, Brazil’s RBS TV reported. The friend, who was not identified, said Thomsen was planning to marry a Polish man she met in England. The friend also said Thomsen was not talking to her parents because she fought with them, RBS said.

Following her time as Miss Brazil, Thomsen moved to Sao Paulo in 2005 from her hometown of Joinville, 250 miles south of Sao Paulo. She said at the time she would work as a model.

A journalism student with bright blue eyes and long dark hair, Thomsen inherited the title of Miss Brazil in 2002 when titleholder Joseane Oliveira acknowledged being married and was stripped of her crown.

Does her disappearance have anything to do with the Polish man she was planning to marry. Is Taiza Thomsen dead? Is she kidnapped? Will she come out and fix this mess?
